Spanish Flu
人類史上最悪の被害をもたらしたと言われるスペインかぜ。
第一次世界大戦を終結させる最大の要因になったとも言われています。
およそ100年前に起きたこの感染症が、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大に伴って、今再び注目を集めています。
今回は、ケンブリッジ大学が作成したスペインかぜのDocumentaryを紹介します。
スペインかぜとは。。。
・1918年から1920年まで、3回に亘り世界的に流行したA型インフルエンザ
・約5億人の感染者を出したと推定されている（当時の世界人口は推定18億人。世界の3分の一の人口にあたる。）
・推定死者数は、1700万人から5000万人
・若年層の死亡率が高い（死者の99%は65歳未満、およそ半数は20歳から40歳）

中国の新型コロナウイルス拡大をきっかけにして、スペインかぜへの関心も高まりました。でも、このコメント、2月初めの頃のもの。。。まだ中国以外では感染者が少なかった時期で、多くの国の人々が対岸の火事だと思っていたのかもしれません。それが油断を生んでしまったのかも。。。

Funny, here in Spain this disease was known historically as the Dutch flu.
やっぱりというか、当然というか、スペインでは、「スペインかぜ」と呼ばれてないんですね。でも、なんでオランダ？🤔
My grandpa lived to be almost 100, he had vivid memories of the Spanish Flu from his childhood. Even in his tiny, isolated town, so many people got sick, and nearly everyone lost at least one family member. He recalled so many funerals, and the “burial system” in his small community being overwhelmed. He saw so many amazing things in his lifetime, his first car was a Model T Ford, to two World Wars, to men on the moon, to TV, computers, cell phones, etc. He traveled with his family in a covered wagon as a little kid. It’s really incredible when you think about it. But this flu was really horrible for so many, it killed healthy adults, not the sick and elderly, and the ripple effects were devastating.

As they mentioned, the Spanish flu was the most deadly for those with the strongest immune system due to how the body responded. With Corona it’s currently the opposite but who knows how it might evolve. Point being, young folks shouldn’t get complacent .
