If the probability of life emerging is even just a tiny fraction above zero, then given the vast scale of the universe—with its billions of galaxies, each containing billions of stars and even more planets—it seems almost certain that life must have appeared elsewhere. Even the smallest chance becomes significant when multiplied across the immense size of the cosmos.

So, if life is possible, surely it must exist somewhere out there. Perhaps we haven’t found it yet simply because our technology isn’t advanced enough. With time, exploration, and improved tools, we might eventually discover signs of extraterrestrial life.

But here lies the mystery, known as the Fermi Paradox: If life is not only possible but actually common, then shouldn’t at least some of those lifeforms have evolved into intelligent civilizations—advanced enough to explore space and find us?

If the universe is full of intelligent life, why haven’t we heard from anyone?

There are two possibilities:

• One is that we are truly alone—that the origin of life is a rare and exceptional event in the universe.
• The other is that life does exist out there, but we are currently unable to communicate with or detect it.

Which do you think is more likely? That we are the only life in the universe? Or that we just haven’t figured out how to reach—or be reached by—others?

私たちは宇宙人に会えるのか？ – フェルミのパラドックス

　もし生命が誕生する確率がほんのわずか、ゼロに近いほど低かったとしても、宇宙のスケールで考えれば、それでも生命がどこかで生まれる可能性は十分にあると言えます。宇宙には何千億もの銀河があり、それぞれの銀河には何千億もの恒星と、さらに多くの惑星が存在しているからです。こうした広大な空間を考えれば、生命が他の場所にも存在していても不思議ではありません。

　つまり、生命が存在している場所は宇宙のどこかに必ずあるはずです。
　私たちがまだそれを発見できていないのは、単に私たちの技術がそこまで到達していないからかもしれません。技術が進歩し、探査が進めば、やがて生命の痕跡を見つけられる日が来るかもしれません。

　しかし、ここで一つの疑問が生まれます。
　もし生命の存在が特別なものではなく、むしろありふれた現象であるなら、すでに高度な文明を築き、宇宙を旅する能力を持った知的生命体が存在していてもおかしくありません。
　そのような文明があれば、むしろ彼らのほうから私たちを見つけているはずです。

　それなのに、なぜ私たちは宇宙人とまったく接触できていないのでしょうか？

　これは「フェルミのパラドックス」と呼ばれる問題です。

　考えられる可能性は二つです。
　一つは、私たち以外に生命は本当に存在しておらず、生命は宇宙の中でも特異な現象であるということ。
　もう一つは、生命は宇宙に広く存在しているものの、今の私たちにはそれとつながる手段がないということです。

　あなたはどちらがよりあり得ると思いますか？
　私たちだけが宇宙で孤独な存在なのでしょうか、それともまだ他の生命とつながる方法を見つけていないだけなのでしょうか。
